May 2012 News NotesBelow are news notes from faculty, staff and students for May 2012. FSHN in the News Kevin Schalinske and his research team who are studying the connection between the adverse side effects of therapeutic vitamin A and over-the-counter supplement SAMe were profiled by the College of Human Sciences. Click to read the full story. Awards and Appointments Congratulations to Dr. Manju Reddy who was promoted to full professor. Student Updates Congratulations to the 79 undergraduate students in FSHN who received their diploma on May 5, 2012. Three FSHN students were selected as a Student Sensation by the College of Human Sciences Student Council for their significant contributions both inside and outside of the classroom. Hailey Boudreau (dietetics), Emma Grinde (Culinary Science) and Kelly Wagner (dietetics) appear on the 2012 poster displayed around campus. Students from ISU (14) traveled to India for a 3-week experience with Drs. Manju Reddy and Sarah Francis. While there, students learned about efforts behind tackling nutrition issues, particularly in rural areas; they worked on community-focused problem solving with local Extension personnel, improving child and family nutrition; students provided assistance in developing tools which professionals will use in efforts to assess community needs. Alumni Update Kathleen Niedert (1973) will receive the Marjorie Hulsjer Copher award for 2012 at the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Philadelphia on October 6. This is the highest honor given by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly American Dietetic Association). The award is named for an early 20th-century pioneer in dietetics.
