July 2012 News NotesBelow are news notes from faculty, staff and students for July 2012. Dr. Nuria Acevedo will join the faculty as an Assistant Professor in February 2013. Acevedo comes to Ames from the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada with research experience in stability and functionality of food systems, fat crystallization, food nanotechnology and food emulsions. Members of the search committee included: Byron Brehm-Stecher (chair), Diane Birt, Larry Johnson, James Hollis, Stephanie Clark, Greg Phillips, Yi Liang and Lisa Dillavou. Congratulations to Justin Banach, Yee Lai, Charlwit Kulchaiyawat, Eric Testroet, Justin Kaiser, Samuel Moore, and Michael Reed who have been named finalists in the American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) Product Development competition. Members of the team will give a poster and oral presentation to judges during the AACC annual meeting September 30-October 3 in Hollywood, Florida. Students can work individually or as part of a team in the competition that requires products to have at least one major cereal/legume ingredient. The Soyfoods Council hosted it’s annual Editors tour and invited Drs. Ruth MacDonald and Lester Wilson to speak to the group while they were on campus. Wilson guided the group as they made their own tofu and MacDonald facilitated a discussion of GMO and non-GMO issues.
