Human Sciences College Established

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, unanimously approved the proposal to combine the Colleges of Family and Consumer Sciences (CFCS) and Education into a new college, the College of Human Sciences, on December 16, 2004.  This final step in the approval process confirmed the establishment of the new college on July 1, 2005. Dr. Cheryl Achterberg accepted the position of Dean of the College of Human Sciences and began her duties on September 1, 2005.  Achterberg had served as the dean of the Schreyer Honors College at Pennsylvania State University since 1998.

Interim Dean of CFCS and FSHN University professor, Dr. Pamela White, with thorough understanding of the issues associated with the new college, agreed to serve as interim dean of the College of Human Sciences from July 1 – August 31, 2005.

Dean Cheryl Achterberg was present as Iowa State University marked the founding of the College of Human Sciences with a ceremonial ribbon-tying on July 1, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. on Osborn Drive between MacKay and Lagomarcino Halls. President Gregory Geoffroy, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Benjamin Allen, CHS Dean designate Cheryl Achterberg, and Caroline Seward, incoming student president of the CHS Council all spoke at the event. Following the presentation, faculty, staff, students and visitors formed a human chain and passed a ceremonial ribbon from each building to be tied in the middle of Osborn Drive.
