Spotlight On Linda Funk

Meet Linda Funk, Executive Director of The Soyfoods Council and Chair of the FSHN External Advisory Committee (EAC). Though not an alum, Funk is a long-time supporter of the department and ISU. She has hosted interns from the culinary science program to work on projects for the past several summers and helps sponsor the ‘Soy You Think You Can Cook’ contest.

Wen uses small organisms to make a big difference in space

Dr. Zhiyou Wen is building photobioreactors to mimic microgravity conditions in order to develop an algal culture system to support life in space.

Zhiyou Wen is finding ways of using a small organism to help support life thousands of miles above the earth. As winner of the first competition for the Early Career Investigator research program sponsored by the Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC),

2012: What a year!

4-H’ers Learn New Skills at Culinary Cookshop

Twenty-nine 4-H’ers from Boone, Hardin, Marshall and Story counties learned cutlery skills, food preparation, nutrition information, and fair exhibiting information at the Culinary Cookshop held at the Iowa State University food science labs December 1.

Safely preparing meals and understanding nutrition information is important in helping Iowa become the healthiest state in the nation. Junior and intermediate 4-H’ers took steps towards health and safety at the Culinary Cookshop on Saturday, December 1.

Dairy Products Evaluation team place well at national competition

Congratulations to the ISU Dairy Products Evaluation Team who placed 4th in all products at the 91st National Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest (CDPEC) November 2-3 in Springfield, MO.

A team of seven students from Food Science and Human Nutrition placed third in the American Association of Cereal Chemists’ International (AACCI) Product Development Competition, held at the annual meeting in Florida this October, with their inventive product called Adventure Bites.
