Iowa State University seeks applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Industrial Microbiology and Fermentation in the department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Qualified candidates at the Assistant, Associate and Full Professor level will be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized research program with strong extramural support in the bioeconomy (biofuels and biobased products) and fermentation fields. Specific research areas that fit most closely with departmental plans include developing: fermentation technologies for converting grain, lignocellulose and syngas for fuels and industrial chemicals; value-added fermentation co-products; technologies that reduce costs, water use, and energy in fermentation; fermentation technologies for new food and feed ingredients with enhanced health and functional properties. The successful candidate will be expected to participate and/or lead research teams and coordinate integrated multidisciplinary projects; and will conduct research in the ISU Fermentation Facility and fermentation programs at the new Biomass Processing Facility of the BioCentury Research Farm.
Multidisciplinary collaboration opportunities exist through the various centers on campus, which include: the Bioeconomy Institute (BEI), the Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR), the BioCentury Research Farm (BCRF), and the NIEHS Center for Research on Dietary Botanical Supplements. Start-up funds for research are available and additional start-up funds may be available from the Office of Biotechnology. Facilities available include substantial biobased products/food processing laboratories, fermentation equipment at bench to pilot scale, a high throughput microbial and chemical analysis laboratory, and core campus facilities for biological, engineering and chemical preparation and analysis. CCUR also has multiple state-of-the-art processing pilot plants. The successful candidate will teach and develop industrial and food fermentation and food processing courses, supervise graduate students, and participate in departmental programs. For senior faculty ranks, leadership of the fermentation programs within CCUR, BEI and the BCRF are available.
