The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition takes individual safety
very seriously. With that in mind, the Safety Committee has recommended
that the following documentation be filled out and properly filed in the
required places. The following files are intended to help you comply
with departmental safety requirements. All files are available in
both Adobe Acrobat pdf and Word file formats. Word files may be
altered to fit your individual lab needs. Every Principal Investigator
(PI) needs to complete the Annual Departmental Safety Check List by Friday
of final week during the fall semester of every year.
- Annual Department Safety Check List Word

Please check off each item as it is completed. If that item
is not applicable to your lab please indicate so by entering NA.
- FSHN Quarterly Laboratory Inspection Sheet Word
PDF
FSHN Quarterly Laboratory Inspection Sheet. This sheet may be used
to perform a quick 5 minute laboratory safety inspection. Please fill
this out and place in the back of your CHP with the rest of the quarterly
laboratory inspection sheets and the comprehensive yearly laboratory
inspection that you perform each year.

Survey This Laboratory Safety document helps you perform the yearly laboratory inspections.
- Link to EH&S for Required and additional Safety Training courses This link gives information about required safety training for laboratory personnel and will help the PI determine what additional training courses are needed for specific laboratory activities.
- Link to EH&S Hazard Inventory Form This form needs to be filled out for all laboratory personnel and must be evaluated when new methods are used in the laboratories.
- Link to EH&S Laboratory Safety Training History Document This new form documents laboratory safety training done throughout the year and it coordinates with the new Laboratory Safety Manual.
- Site-specific Safety in a Chemical Laboratory Word

The department needs a copy of your outline that you use for your
site-specific training for your laboratory on file in the main office.
This is an example for you to customize for your laboratory.
- Link to EH&S SOP Template This new form coordinates SOPs with the new Laboratory Safety Manual.
- Link to EH&S for Prior Approval for working with hazardous laboratory operations This form indicates who should be working hazardous substances (ie. Chemical carcinogens, pathogens, etc) and indicates that the person has had the appropriate training to perform the procedure.
- Link to EH&S Radiation Safety Laboratory Audit form This form is used to perform surveys in laboratories that use radioisotopes.
- Gas Cylinder Standard Operating Procedure Word

- Alternate Principal Investigator (PI) Policy Word
PDF
This alternate PI policy has been approved by the FSHN department.
The policy includes a list of the training that the department feels
the Technically Qualified Person (TQP) needs to have in order to handle
an emergency in the absence of the PI. If you think other training
fits your criteria for your lab please make those changes and send
a copy of the training that the TQP needs for supervising your laboratory
in your absence to 2312 Food Sciences Building.
- Checklist for the Alternate Principal Investigator (PI) Word

- Directions for assembling and using the vacuum pump and dry ice
bath for rotary evaporation.
We have written directions that will enable the user to assemble the
vacuum pump, dry ice bath, and rotary evaporator and use the rotary
evaporator. It is important that you protect the vacuum pump
so that it will run smoothly for years and years of service.
If you choose to use regular ice instead of dry ice we have included
an SOP to help you determine how many cold traps you need to use in
between the dry ice bath and the vacuum pump. A picture is included
to help you visualize the proper setup. Two extensive lists
of boiling points of solvents are available in the Merck, 12th Edition
© 1996 on pages Misc-36-41. One list arranges compounds by ascending
boiling points and the other lists the compounds in alphabetical order.
Please see the following information for those directions.
- List of Professor-In-Charge of Laboratories in the Food Science,
MacKay, and Human Nutritional Sciences Building PDF
