Admission

Research assistantships are offered to all graduate students admitted to Food Science and Technology or Nutritional Sciences. Students wishing to be considered for a research assistantship beginning in fall semesters must have materials submitted by January 15.

Scholarships are also available on a competitive basis from FSHN, the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Human Sciences, and other sources. More »

The following must be received in order for your application file to be complete for review by the Graduate Admissions Committee:

• Iowa State University Graduate College Application
• Department application
• Nonrefundable application fee: domestic applicants - $40.00; international applicants - $90.00
• Official academic transcripts from each college or university currently or previously attended. (Official transcripts from Iowa State University are not required.)
• Three letters of recommendation from faculty members and/or employers acquainted with the qualifications that would make the applicant a successful graduate student
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (verbal, quantitative and analytical writing), minimum requirements:
  • Before August 1, 2011: Verbal - 400, quantitative - 500, analytical writing - 3.5
  • After August 1, 2011: Verbal - 146, quantitative - 144, analytical writing - 3.5.
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).  Required for non-native English speakers.  Minimum requirements: Paper-based - 550, computer-based - 213, internet-based - 79.

Letter of recommendation process: Use the online letter of recommendation process on the Iowa State University Graduate College application.  When you include your recommenders’ names and e-mail addresses on the application form, they will be sent instructions on how to submit their letter electronically.  If recommenders prefer to submit a hard copy, they may download and complete the Letter of Recommendation form and submit it directly to our department.

Food Science and Technology Majors

In order to be considered for admission to our department, you must first submit a pre-application form (no fees are required with this form). The pre-application is to determine whether minimum requirements for admission have been met.  If these minimum requirements have been met, a formal application from the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition will be sent.  Receiving formal application materials does not imply, suggest, or guarantee admission to our graduate program.

Incomplete pre-applications will not be considered for review. All scores must be listed on applications; applications are considered incomplete without them.
