What is a learning community?

The year-long, residential learning community provides an opportunity for students with interests in food and nutrition careers to make meaningful connections both in and outside the classroom with their peers and departmental faculty. Students live on the same residence hall floor and enroll in common courses, including FSHN Orientation, Biology I, First-Year Composition, and Library during fall semester, and Introduction to Human Nutrition, Biology II, and a portfolio seminar during spring semester. Students participate in social, professional, and service learning opportunities.

Why would you want to be part of a learning community?

Living together in the same residence hall allows students to study together and extend their course-based learning. Students interact with upper-class FSHN student peer mentors who provide support and assistance as needed. Learning community participants have opportunities to make connections with faculty in social and professional activities. Contact with faculty members and involvement in a service learning project also assists students in exploring career options and understanding the relevance college coursework and experiences to their professional goals.
