Welcome to the Fabulous World of Food & Nutrition!
 |
Ever wondered how gumballs can be so hard in the machine and then so easily chewed once in your mouth?
|
 |
Or why some muffins will rise to a perfect dome shape and others just seem to go flat? |
Food Science is a field that is designed to answer these questions. Food Scientists are concerned with "all things food" at all stages of its development (from the time a crop leaves the farm until it ends up on your dinner plate)! Food Scientists have a passion for food and science. (Bet the title, "food scientist" didn't give that away!) Food scientists apply basic science such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, and physics along with knowledge of food preparation, nutrition, engineering, and consumer behavior to develop, improve, and market food products.
The demand for food scientists is HIGH which means a range of career opportunities and very attractive salaries for Food Science graduates. Intrigued yet?

Is your health and the health of others important to you? Are you curious why people with food allergies will react so strongly to certain foods? And why is it that athletes are always told to eat pasta and other carbohydrates before their events?
These questions and others motivate many to go into the fields of nutrition and dietetics. Nutrition and Dietetics studies how the food we eat impacts our bodies and health. Dietitians and nutritionists apply an understanding of the basic sciences and the human body (biology, chemistry, anatomy, & physiology) to nutrition. Dietitians and nutritionists then share this knowledge with the public through writing articles, programming, presenting, or counseling.

There are many opportunities for Dietitians and Nutritionists. Dietitians in particular can work in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, and food companies which means lots of job opportunities! Interested in learning more?
