Transferring to Iowa State University to major in: Culinary Science, Diet & Exercise, Dietetics, Food Science, and/or Nutritional Science
Welcome Transfer Students! Many students transfer to Iowa State University in Food Science and Human Nutrition majors. The keys to a successful transfer are based around the following principles:
- Start early and plan ahead. Food Science and Human Nutrition majors are science-based, which means that much of the coursework is sequential and builds from semester to semester. Early planning ensures that you will be taking the courses that you need in the order that you need them.
- Plan for early and on-going communication with the Transfer Academic Advisor at Iowa State University and at your current institution. The Food Science and Human Nutrition Department has an advisor specifically geared toward helping students plan successful transfers. This advisor can help you understand course requirements, how courses will transfer, when the best time will be to transfer, and what steps to take to make the transition smooth. You are welcome to contact the FS HN transfer advisor at any point prior to and during your transfer.

If you are a current community college student, you may also consider participating in the Admissions Partnership Program (APP) to receive additional access to advisors and other resources at Iowa State University even before your transfer.
-
Start your science coursework. Even if you are only exploring the possibility of majors in this area. You will benefit from beginning the science coursework recommended in the Food Science and Human Nutrition transfer plans (available on this webpage). If you do decide to pursue a major in this area, completion of the science coursework will best position you for a successful and efficient transfer.
- Use the transfer plans and resources available from this webpage. The following transfer plans have been designed so that you can gather the information that you need to select appropriate courses at your current institution. The transfer plans are designed as guides and are current as of the date that they are prepared, but should not be used in place of contact with the FS HN transfer academic advisor.
- If you just decided that you want to transfer to Iowa State University and/or select a major in this area, that’s ok. Just plan to be in touch with the transfer advisor in FS HN as soon as possible so that she can help you select courses that will apply to your newly selected program. Understand that just like changing your major at the same school, changing majors from one school to another may mean adjustments to requirements and expectations. There is a course that you will take your first semester in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department (FS HN 110) that is designed to help you understand these new requirements/expectations, so plan to be open to learning how your newly selected degree program will help you meet your goals!

| TRANSFER PLANS/FAQ’s: |
Please click the following links to view transfer plans and FAQ’s by major. These transfer plans can be used by students transferring from most 2 and 4 year institutions. As noted on each plan, these are accurate on the date they are prepared, but may not reflect subsequent changes by ISU or your transfer institution. For this reason, this transfer plan should be used as a guide only, and should not replace consultation with an advisor at your current institution and at ISU.
