Purpose of the Trip

Our goal was to increase our understanding of European food safety concerns involving farming practices, regulations, research activities, and consumer attitudes, from the perspectives of consumer groups, businesses, government, producers, and university leaders. Specific topics addressed in discussions, tours, and briefings with those we visited included the recent mad cow disease and foot and mouth disease crises in the UK, as well as on-going issues surrounding the introduction and acceptance of genetically modified foods.
